Supporting resilient communities empowered to live healthy, drug-free lives

Communities Talk

SAMHSA’s Communities Talk initiative empowers local coalitions to host vital conversations about underage drinking and other substance use. In York County, DFYC uses this platform to bring families and youth together for events focused on prevention and mental wellness. We believe that open, clear dialogue is the heart of a resilient community, providing local families with the support and insights they need to grow healthy and strong together.

Why Early Conversations Matter

Starting the conversation early is one of the most effective ways to prevent youth substance use. When parents and caregivers talk openly about the risks of alcohol and other drugs before children face peer pressure, they build a foundation of trust and knowledge. These early talks aren't just one-time events; they are ongoing bridges that help children feel safe coming to you with questions as they grow. Research shows that children who learn about the risks from their parents are significantly less likely to experiment with substances later in life.

Building a Safety Net of Trust

Prevention is about more than just saying 'no.' It’s about equipping our youth with the emotional tools and confidence to lead healthy, inspired lives. By sharing clear expectations and staying connected to their daily world, we show our children that their wellness is our priority. These conversations matter because they reinforce a sense of belonging and support, ensuring that York County’s youth know they are heard and that their health is supported by an entire community of care.

Amplifying Prevention in York County

DFYC brings the Communities Talk campaign home to York County, Pennsylvania. We are running a 22-week campaign packed with local workshops, tailored conversation starters, hands-on support for parents, podcasts,  mini-events, and more. We will conclude the campaign with a banquet on October 18th at Pine Ridge Farms in Stewartstown. Together, we amplify SAMHSA’s mission to protect our youth and build a resilient, informed community.
